posters
I’m in the Journalism school’s equivalent of a graphic design class. It’s totally titties. For the poster assignment, I made a fake poster for last year’s Rock the Garden. I figured it was cooler than making up my dream concert, which would consist of Animal Collective, Dan Deacon and somehow Christopher Walken. We have to show our work in critiques, and I don’t...

where the wild things came from
Or at least that’s what Nick thought the title was (I believe that’s the unmade prequel). I’m trying to get started selling things on etsy.com, so i thought, why not paint the film that is the subject of a media frenzy? But, not crazy about how prominent the background is. Here’s a close-up of the part i like:
I also painted a trippy version of some WTWTA silhouettes:

allen ginsberg
Mark, A&E intern and fellow survivor of Qadri Ismail’s highly educational, humorous and humbling English class wanted me to paint Allen Ginsberg. I noticed he looks like Jeff Goldblum and David Cross, so I wrote that on there, and added some Google Search recommendations about them.

No homo
I first started thinking about the phrase “no homo” when I got into Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3. He says, “Everybody’s on my dick - no homo.” As far as I can see, men say “no homo” when discussing dicks in order to show that they have no sexual attraction to the male phallus. They should be glad to know that Facebook has rendered that necessity obsolete....

craig finn
my friends jay and lucy asked me to paint craig finn for their apartment. they have a real-life, grown-up apartment with nice decorations and not a hovel at a pizza place with crooked floors and a dead rabbit under the porch like moi. what i’m trying to say is a) i was intimidated to paint something for their walls b) nervous to paint craig finn because i don’t feel terribly familiar...

kate and randy moss
a girl named brittani who i don’t know well but have been drunk with suggested i paint kate moss. i proposed painting her with randy moss, and decided to do it. it is strange because i, not being a football fan, had forgotten randy moss existed until just last week. i had a dream that there was a parade in roseville and the vikings were there and some announcer guy said, “ladies and...

abe lincoln
at work today we were discussing our old managing editor andy mannix’s obsession with abe lincoln. whether it’s ironic or not, he loves the guy enough to be abe for the zombie pub crawl. i said, “andy, do you want an abe lincoln portrait?” and he said, “what?” and jay said, “becky made me two little boy portraits [as a joke],” and then kara said,...

ashlee simpson-wentz-mcdonalds - take two.
i explained why i wanted to paint ashlee simpson as ronald mcdonald earlier, the first time i tried. i like this one better, although it still doesn’t look like her. did i mention that in japan, ronald mcdonald is often played by cool, sexy people? this probably wouldn’t even be ironic there. yeah, i had a summer where i researched ronald mcdonald in japan for weeks. he’s...

hank moody, mulder, whatever you please
felt like painting something out of esquire, and found this picture of david duchovny. i’m not pleased with the nose and general face shape, but jason said the shading looked nice so i decided not to scrap it. anyway, i like californication a lot, even though it’s outrageous and for some odd reason the fictional hank moody has a real-life novel out that i found at barnes and noble....

f. scott fitzgerald
i made this picture of f. scott fitzgerald for my wonderful friend and rollerblading buddy jack. i wanted it orange and blue, because they seemed like f. scott fitzgerald-y colors to me, and i realized that it’s because in my alphabet f is orange and s is blue.

famous things
Everyone loves famous things. Like Coca-Cola, and Ashlee Simpson and Ronald McDonald
Ashlee Simpson-Wentz-McDonalds.
There is something interesting to me about Ashlee Simpson. Something that makes me want to pick on her. (In high school I reviewed her album “I am Me.” All I remember is that the headline was “Ashlee Simpson: She is Her” and it made fun of her use of...
